Maar het patroon dat ik gebruikte voor dit zomerjurkje heet nu eenmaal niet "Australië".

Ik kwam bij Bella Sunshine Designs terecht op zoek naar een gratis raglanpatroon. Ik werd lid van de facebookgroep, downloadde het patroon en zag vanaf dan regelmatig schattige jurkjes over mijn scherm wandelen. Ik vond dat helemaal niet erg, dus bleef ik lid van de groep. 

Toen kwam de lancering van een patroon dat onmiddellijk in mijn winkelmandje belandde: de Sahara (jurk/shirt). Ook al ging dat compleet tegen mij G.U.T.A.-voornemens in. Het was een perfect patroon om wat tricot te verwerken voor deze zomer!

I ended up at Bella Sunshine Designs in search of the free raglan pattern. I joined the Facebookgroup, downloaded the pattern and saw a lot of cute dresses parading across my wall from that day forth. I did not mind a daily bit of cuteness at all: I stayed in the group. That's how I noticed the launch of the Sahara pattern. It went straight to my shopping cart. Even if that went against my pattern challenge (explained at the bottom of the post). It's the perfect summer pattern for some knits stashbusting. 

Ik dacht dat de lap met koala's die dochterlief uit de doos viste te klein zou zijn voor een cirkelrok, maar na enig gepuzzel kreeg ik alle delen er nipt uit. Ervaring leerde me dat een cirkelrok omzomen een tijdrovend werkje is, dus ging ik eens een onbekende kant op: rolzomen, zou dat niet tof zijn?
Ik bezit zelf geen overlock. Gelukkig kon ik een vriendin overtuigen om aan haar exemplaar te prutsen. Met Youtube als gids kwam er een mooie golvende rolzoom te voorschijn kwam. Dank u, Mieke!

I thought the first piece of fabric my daughter dug up from the stash would be too small for a full circle skirt, but I managed to squeeze in all the pieces. I have learned that circle skirts take ages to hem, so I wanted to try something new: a rolled hem.
I don't own a serger. Fortunately, I could persuade a friend to mess up the settings on hers. With Youtube as our guide, she made a lovely curvy seam for me. Thanks, Mieke!


Bij het in elkaar zetten van het topje leerde ik 2 (voor mij) nieuwe technieken.
De eerste nieuwigheid was de "burrito-methode" om een mouwloze top af te werken. De schematische uiteenzetting in werkbeschrijving wordt online aangevuld bewegende beeldjes. Ik dubbelcheckte of ik het goed begrepen had met dit en dit filmpje. Ik maakte enkele foto's terwijl ik ermee bezig was...

Assembling this dress I learned 2 new (ok, new for me) techniques: 

The first one was the burrito method to line a sleeveless top. The instructions in the pattern come with moving images. I double checked if I understood correctly with Youtube clips like this one. I made some pictures while working...

De tweede techniek is een manier om naden uit te dunnen. Ik knipte meestal allebei de delen van een naad gelijk af of gebruikte heel kleine naaiwaarden om diktes te vermijden. In de werkbeschrijving wordt verwezen naar een andere manier: ongelijk afknippen. Dat ga ik nog toepassen!

Er wordt ook goed uitgelegd hoe je een binnenstiksel geeft om de voering op haar plaats te houden. Dat leerde ik in de naailes, maar paste ik nog niet toe op tricot. Nu dus wel, maar met soluvlies om het lubberen tegen te gaan. Het lukte goed bij de lage hals en rug uitsnijdingen.

The second technique is about seam grading. I'm definitely going to use that more!

I also used understitching on knits for the first time. I never dared to try it before because I was afraid of wavy seams. I used a watersoluble interfacing just to make sure and it worked out beautifully on the low curves at the chest and the back.

I launched a pattern challenge for myself and made completing it a New Year's resolution. I want to actually use patterns instead of piling them up on my hard disk. I have succeeded in using a few already and I try not to buy patterns I might use "someday in the undefined future". Every new purchase needs an actual plan!
